Thai pork takeaway!
UK - Following a visit by five Thai farmers to its headquarters at Beeford, East Yorkshire, international pig-breeding company ACMC Ltd has scooped an order worth £45,000, for 68 boars and gilts including 40 ultra-prolific Meidam grandparent females.
Besides seeing ACMC nucleus units, the delegation - led by Dr Suchat Prommano, managing director of ACMC's Asian subsidiary - visited other company-owned farms in the area and an abattoir. As far afield as Thailand, the farmers had heard of this breed's performance, particularly its prolificacy, and wanted to investigate this first-hand.
"They were impressed with its good temperament, growth efficiency and carcase quality and will be using the imports to breed replacements to completely repopulate one of their own herds," commented Stephen Curtis, ACMC chairman.
The high-health status animals are due to be flown out to Bangkok this autumn.
The developing Thai pig industry has 800,000 sows producing 16 million slaughter pigs annually. Fifty per cent of production is in the hands of ten integrated companies, 35 per cent in medium-to-large farms and 15 per cent classified as 'back-yard' production.
"Having set up an office in Thailand, to advise and service pig farmers, it is now very important for us to establish licensed breeders who will be mainly responsible for producing the parent female for commercial producers," added Mr Curtis.
