Denmark buys Carbon Credits from Thai Farmers

BANGKOK - H.E. Ulrik Helweg-Larsen, Danish Ambassador to Thailand, has on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed an agreement with a group of Thai pig farmers on purchase of carbon credits.

Carbon credits are traded as part of the international Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). This mechanism promotes activities that limit emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, thereby helping to reduce climate change.

The agreement concerns a project on installation of wastewater treatment systems at three pig farms in the Ratchaburi Province of Thailand. The farms have installed a closed treatment system to treat the barn-flushing waste water from their pig rearing operations. The new system will replace traditional open lagoon treatment systems that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. The new system is treating the wastewater in a process that will generate biogas, and this gas will serve as fuel for power generation.

Among other issues the environmental impacts of the activities were discussed during a public consultation on the project earlier this year.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to sign additional CDM agreements with other Thai companies in the near future. Private companies that have ideas for CDM projects may contact the Danish embassy.
