IFA to consider revised nitrates plan

IRELAND - The president of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Padraig Walshe has called an emergency meeting of its executive council for Sunday afternoon to consider the latest Teagasc advice on nitrates.

Mr Walshe said last night the IFA’s strong stance had been fully justified in rejecting the action programme that was based on the original advice from Teagasc. A revised Teagasc document has been issued.

Mr Walshe said he continued to have serious concerns as Teagasc was linking fertiliser limits to precise stocking rates.

He said this removes the flexibility farmers need and increases the bureaucracy they must face.

“There is a fundamental difference between recommendations given as advice and statutory upper limits to penalise farmers. This point has been missed up until now,” he said.
