Pig movement declaration becomes mandatory

NEW ZEALAND - Moving pigs between farms is about to become subject to the same paperwork as sending them to slaughter.

From March the first, all pork producers will have to complete an Animal Status Declaration when moving pigs anywhere within the country.

Pork Industry Board chief executive Angus Davidson says the new legislation brings the industry into line with other meat export sectors.

Mr Davidson says the rule is merely making mandatory something most pig farmers have been doing on a voluntary basis since a declaration was first drawn up in 2002.

He says although most farmers are filling out paper forms at present - and not complaining about the extra paperwork - the new system does have electronic potential.

Mr Davidson says there is quite a lot of movement of pigs within New Zealand.
