Print This Page Pork Industry seeking lift from juicy new product
NEW ZEALAND - The pork industry is hoping that a new product based on the classic pork and apple combination will put some zest back into a sector under siege from expanding imports and shrinking prices. In what is believed to be a world first, Massey University scientists have taken the moisture enhancement process commonly used in pig meat a step further, and developed a way of infusing pork with apple juice.
The first "apple tender" pork products went on sale in Auckland shops last week.
The board's chief executive, Angus Davidson, says shoppers have been snapping them up.
The apple enhanced pork products will be officially released at the Meat Retailers conference in Christchurch next week.
Mr Davidson says the board has plans to extend the range of juice enhanced products as part of its efforts to increase returns for pig farmers, who have seen their incomes undermined by imports and by falling lamb prices.
