Western Cape Prevents Spread of Swine Fever

WESTERN CAPE - The Western Cape government is to mount two roadblocks to prevent the spread of classical Swine Fever to the province.

The disease has been detected at Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape where at least a thousand pigs will be culled this week.

The Western Cape government says it plans to keep the roadblocks on the N2 and on the R62 for the next six months and thereafter a further assessment will be made and a decision taken on the measures of movement control.

No live pigs are allowed to move into or out of the affected areas and no pork products are allowed out of the restricted areas.

The provincial agriculture department said all role-players were on board, following the establishment of a "detailed" plan of action that was discussed and finalised at a meeting in Oudtshoorn early last week.
