Scottish Pig Sector Fears As Halls Cuts Jobs

SCOTLAND - Pig production in Scotland was dealt a serious blow yesterday with the news that Halls of Broxburn is making 150 workers redundant with immediate effect at its plant in West Lothian.

As a result of Unison's pension dispute with the Meat Hygiene Service and the possibility of a five-day strike next week, Halls has also announced that it will not accept any pigs from producers until the dispute has been resolved. He said: "Given the difficult trading conditions for the company in recent years, this may prove to be a fatal blow."
