Scottish Pig Sector Fears As Halls Cuts Jobs

SCOTLAND - Pig production in Scotland was dealt a serious blow yesterday with the news that Halls of Broxburn is making 150 workers redundant with immediate effect at its plant in West Lothian.

As a result of Unison's pension dispute with the Meat Hygiene Service and the possibility of a five-day strike next week, Halls has also announced that it will not accept any pigs from producers until the dispute has been resolved. The plant processes up to 12,000 pigs each week under normal circumstances.

David Cameron, the managing director at Broxburn, also warned that the plant may have to close permanently, with the loss of 1,000 jobs in total.

He said: "Given the difficult trading conditions for the company in recent years, this may prove to be a fatal blow."
