Eastern Cape Swine Fever Warning

EASTERN CAPE - The agriculture department yesterday warned that no live pigs or pig products may be taken out of Eastern Cape following an outbreak of swine fever in the province.

In order to contain and eradicate the disease, movement control measures had been strengthened by declaring the whole province a “classical swine fever- controlled area” under the Animal Diseases Act, said spokesman Steve Galane.

“Roadblocks at the borders of Eastern Cape are enforcing the movement ban to prevent spread of the disease,” said Galane. “Hunters must take note that the measures include wild pigs, warthogs and bush pigs, as well as any of their products.”

Meanwhile, a surveillance programme is taking place in all the provinces to detect any occurrence of the viral disease. Last month, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) revealed that more than 245000 pigs had been culled since the outbreak of classical swine fever in Eastern Cape last year.
