A chance to outlaw British pork identity theft
UK - Identity theft maybe the single biggest obstacle to the recovery of the British pig industry. But the industry has the opportunity to do something about it says the NPA.|
NPA is active on members' behalf in Brussels & Whitehall, and with processors, supermarkets & caterers - fighting for the growth and pros-perity of the UK pig industry. |
Identity theft happens every day, in every town, despite seven years of campaigning by the National Pig Association and the British Pig Executive.
Identity theft - or 'passing off' to use the legal term - happens every time a retailer fudges labelling to make foreign pork products sound British. Or displays Union flags on shelves containing low-welfare imported pork, bacon and ham.
As it exists today, European labelling law is a rogue's charter. It is long overdue a complete overhaul - and that is exactly what Brussels is planning. The Commission is currently consulting on country-of-origin labelling and other important aspects of honest labelling. It wants to hear from interested parties.
The British pig industry will never have a better opportunity to state its case. And if it fails to make a good case now, it will have few grounds for complaining in the future. But there isn't much time to act. Deadline for the Brussels consultation is June 16. - Digby Scott.
