Pig farmers paid out R85m so far

SOUTH AFRICA - A total of R85-million has been paid out in compensation to farmers after the outbreak of swine fever in the Eastern Cape, says Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Thoko Didiza.

Delivering her policy review in the National Council of Provinces on Friday, Didiza said a further R65-million was likely to be paid out. She said so far the commercial sector was free from the disease and “mopping-up operations” continued in the communal areas.

Regarding the Micro Agricultural Finance Institutions of South Africa that was launched in 2005, with the O R Tambo district municipality one of the pilot areas, Didiza said workshops were being held with extension officers with a view to expanding the Mafisa roll-out.
