Defra Acknowledges Virkon(R) S for use in Organic Farming
UK - International biosecurity expert, DuPont Animal Health Solutions (DAHS), is delighted to announce that Virkon(R) S, the widely used livestock and veterinary disinfectant, is now accepted for use in organic farming within the UK.
The UK Advisory Committee on Organic Standards (ACOS) recommended to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) that the combination of materials used in Virkon® S is suitable for use in organic production as they are analogous to those allowed in Annex II E of the Compendium of UK Organic Standards (DEFRA July 2005).
This news will be particularly welcome to organic producers when cleaning and disinfecting buildings, equipment and utensils covered by Annex II E.
Andy Deeks, DAHS Global Marketing Services Leader, explains, "This DEFRA announcement is excellent news for UK organic farmers and further supports our independent biodegradation data, which shows that Virkon® S consists mainly of inorganic salts which decompose into harmless by-products leaving no residues of concern within the environment.
There can be no doubt that the selection of the correct disinfectant for the task at hand is an increasingly important issue to all our customers, which is why we provide detailed technical overviews of all our disinfectant products on our website www.ahs.dupont.com"
