Print This Page Collect dead vermin or risk a fine
UK - Pig-keepers are reminded that after baiting for vermin they must locate and dispose of any dead bodies.Recently in Norfolk poisoned rats were eaten by two buzzards which subsequently died. The employer of the game-keeper who laid the bait – and who subsequently failed to search for any dead rats and dispose of them safely – was fined £2,000 with £400 costs.
The case highlights the legal duty of employers to train their employees in safe rodenticide practices, to prevent poisoning of non-target species. Training in the use of rodenticides is available from the British Pest Control Association, www.bpca.org.uk.
