NFU wins relaxing of set aside rules for grazing
15 August 2006UK - The NFU has won a change in the rules to have set aside land used for grazing to ease the current shortage of animal fodder caused by the recent heat wave.
Tinder-dry conditions have left farmers with a grazing shortage but this exemption will allow farmers to use set aside land for grazing or harvest it for animal feed where grass elsewhere has dried up.
NFU livestock board chairman Thomas Binns said: “This makes sense given the shortage of grazing in parts of the country. This is positive news for livestock farmers and should go some way in alleviating the shortage of forage.
This victory comes after a similar derogation to ease the rules on set aside cutting, with the RPA extending the cutting season until August 31 2006.
