Zinc sulphate from China

UK - Zinc sulphate from China has – in some cases - been found to contain very high levels of cadmium. Cadmium in feed may result in cadmium accumulation in edible tissues, particularly in kidneys.

Cadmium in food may accumulate in the human body and may induce kidney dysfunction, skeletal damage and reproductive deficiencies. It cannot be excluded that it acts as a human carcinogen.

With this in mind, a decision – still in draft form – by the European Commission will only permit imports of zinc sulphate from China intended for animal feeding or human consumption where the consignment is accompanied by the results of certified sampling and analysis. The new rule will apply from November.
