Easily Confused With Ileitis
US - Clinically, PCV2 is easily confused with ileitis. Observations in the U.S. indicate circovirus is linked to enteric effects, according to Dr. John Kolb, biologics manager for Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc.
The virus has shown an ability to thicken the gut, similar to Lawsonia ileitis on first inspection, although the lesions are easily differentiated with histopathological examination, he says.
Kolb knows of several cases where pigs placed into the finisher had typical appearing diarrhea, but there was neither salmonella nor ileitis present. The only thing they could determine was PCV2 infection. PCV2 diarrhea, in fact, is sometimes seen in a group prior to PCV2-associated PMWS.
An American Association of Swine Veterinarians task force now refers to the clinical manifestations of PCV2 infection as PCVAD, or PCV2-associated diseases. Dr. Tom Gillespie is heading the task force, which is charged with gathering case studies on circovirus-related syndromes.
