Keep it transparent, urges NPA chairman

UK - Britain's leading pig processors have received a note from NPA chairman Stewart Houston expressing disappointment that some may be planning an across-the-board deduction per pig of 27p-30p, following the introduction yesterday of the two percent hot weight rebate.

THE VOICE OF THE UK PIG INDUSTRY

NPA is active on members' behalf in Brussels & Whitehall, and with processors, supermarkets & caterers - fighting for the growth and pros-perity of the UK pig industry.

The rebate – a European Union requirement – is intended to be used if carcasses are weighed within 45 minutes of slaughter. It is designed to make up for moisture loss from a freshly slaughtered carcase as it cools.

Stewart Houston says he would prefer a bottom line reduction to a levy, in order not to penalize smaller pigs, and to maintain transparency ie. the ability to compare pig prices. He has sent a copy of his communiqué to Maurice McCartney of the British Meat Processors and will be holding a conference call with processors later today.
