A call for more hog farm inspectors

WINCHESTER - Two Republican lawmakers have called on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to reshuffle resources and commit more inspectors to East Central Indiana as the hog industry continues to grow here.

This year, of the 502,782 swine permitted in 92 new confined feeding operations (CFOs) and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs,) more than a third -- 186,862 -- have been permitted in East Central Indiana.

Three counties in the area -- Randolph, Jay and Wayne -- are in the state's top five for permits granted this year.

Much of the growth can be found in House districts 33 and 54, the territory of state reps. Bill Davis and Tom Saunders, respectively. Friday, they joined forces to say they've asked IDEM to dedicate more people to this area. Both said that if the agency's administration doesn't respond, they will pursue legislation on the matter next session.

Davis said, "We hear you. We understand your concerns and we're asking IDEM to send the resources out here."
