How to earn the letters that tell the world you are a PIPR (pig industry professional)
UK - People who work on pig units are highly skilled and it is time they were given the recognition they deserve, says industry training chief Richard Longthorp. The NPA professional register - or PIPR - will be launched in a few weeks. There will be four categories.
- Skilled stockman/woman.
- Supervisor.
- Manager/owner.
- Adviser/associate.
“Think what a boost it will give members of the register,” says Richard Longthorp. “Think what a boost it will give the whole industry, when we can go into schools, for instance, and say that 60 percent of our people are on a professional register.”
For the moment, let’s concentrate on the skilled stockman category because these are the people the industry relies on for its future success.
How it works
You join the register and over three years you collect 60 points. It’s as simple as that. In many cases you will be collecting points for things you are already doing, such as attending training sessions (up to 24 points a day), attending pig discussion group meetings (up to 12 points) and subscribing to Pig World (3 points).

How to register events for PIPR points
A few months ago, event organisers were given an opportunity on this website to express an interest in registering events such as technical meetings, and pig discussion group meetings. There was a tremendous response. Event organisers will soon be able to go further and register specific events. Watch this space for details.
