OlyWest hog plant opponents form NoWinniPig alliance

CANADA - Opponents of a proposed hog processing plant in Winnipeg announced Friday they've banded together to form a NoWinniPig campaign, in their hope that strength in numbers can drive the plant out of the city.

Environmentalists, animal welfare activists, municipal election candidates and concerned residents joined the OlyOpp Business Group, which was founded earlier this year by St. Boniface business owners who oppose the $200-million proposed plant, to be based in the city's St. Boniface Industrial Park.

Winnipeg city council voted in May to support OlyWest's plant proposal through a $3.4-million incentive package.

In August, the company submitted its application to the provincial Clean Environment Commission (CEC), which is preparing to review OlyWest's environmental licence application. It will hold public hearings on the application next year.

Proponents of the OlyWest hog plant say the facility could employ more than 1,000 people and help boost Manitoba's economy.
