It's October Pork Month
US - That means it's time to take a Mower County pork producer to lunch. Perhaps a Windsor chop or ham sandwich. Maybe a second breakfast of the day of ham or bacon or sausage and eggs.Pork is king for a month - at least. Hormel Foods Corporation's flagship plant and Quality Pork Processors, Inc. in Austin guarantee that. So do the pork producing farm families scattered everywhere.
On a personal basis, Pete Thome, son of Gary and Jane Thome, rural Adams, is the Mower County Pork Ambassador. Preaching pork is what Thome does on behalf of producers. The National Barrow Show, the “World Series of Swine Shows” finished its 60th annual run at the Mower County Fairgrounds in Austin last month.
Each September, producers make a pilgrimage to “SPAMtown, U.S.A.” to showcase the finest in swine and the best swine judges in the nation. Nobody forgets the impact the swine industry has on the Mower County economy. Ever.
