Swaziland's ban on pig imports lifted

SOUTH AFRICA - The ban on the importation of pigs and related products from South Africa has been partially lifted with effect from today.

However, this would only apply to pig products and not live pigs. This was announced in a statement issued by the Kingdom's ministry of agriculture and co-operatives director of veterinary and livestock services Dr. Robert Thwala.
“This has been made possible by the establishment of an acceptable disease freedom assurance system by the Veterinary Authority of South Africa, based on the principle of compartmentalisation.”

The director said the SA authority had produced a list of establishments which had been declared Classical Swine Fever (CSF)-free compartments and had also clarified relevant issues in the context of a CSF Disease Free Protocol.

“Therefore, in the circumstances and importance of trade facilitation without unduly compromising disease control measures in place, the importation of products of pig origin may only be permitted from those establishments approved for export to Swaziland by the Swaziland Veterinary Authority,” he stated.
