Market analysis

The recurrence of pig diseases in major hog production regions earlier led to the deaths of significant numbers of hogs (60-90 kg) that had yet to reach maturity for release into the market.

With the epidemic situation improving somewhat recently, relatively more hogs were released into the market.

Authorities continued to tighten inspections on cross province deliveries for clenbuterol abuse, raising pork consumers' confidence. This, coupled with the cooler weather, has bolstered pork demand.

Pork exports from most major hog production regions were favourable of late, boosting hog demand and hence prices. Singapore has lifted its ban on pork imports from Shandong province. Hong Kong and Macau have also lifted their respective bans on hog and pork imports from regions including Hunan and Guangdong.

Meanwhile, pork exporters in Sichuan province were actively seeking to resume shipments overseas as soon as possible, pushing up local hog prices.

Market forecast

With currently reduced supply, and improved pork demand and exports, prices are seen to register further gains in the week ahead.
