'Trojan Pig' Highlights Imports Row
30 November 2006UK - Farmers have used a giant pig to highlight their claims that cheap, inferior imports are damaging the pig industry. In 2005 more than 850,000 tonnes of pork was imported. Campaigners fear that it is not clear to consumers the meat is imported. Farmer Steve Hoyland of West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire said shoppers should look for the quality standard mark.
People are buying imported pork because of unclear labels, he said. About 70% of the pig meat imported in 2005 was not produced to the UK's higher welfare standards, the campaigners say.
However, imports remain legal due to EU law. In some shops, less than half of imported pork, bacon, ham and sausages is clearly labelled, according to a British Pig Executive report.
