Print This Page Rain puts hog waste lagoons too high
NORTH CAROLINA - Four hog farms in the region are experiencing critical swelling at lagoons after last week's 6-inch rainfall. And with more wet weather expected in the coming days, state officials are taking early action to keep the waste from overflowing into the Northeast Cape Fear River.The state Division of Water Quality is monitoring two farms in Pender County, one in Onslow and one in Brunswick, to make sure they are complying with laws on storing and disposing of waste.
"We're very concerned about the capacity of the lagoons," said Charles Stehman, regional supervisor for aquifer protection in the Division of Water Quality. The agency identified problem lagoons after taking aerial photographs of the farms.
