Print This Page Local growers selling locally good for all
US - The recent trend of local growers selling their produce, poultry, pork and beef locally, keeping local dollars in the local economy, is gaining momentum and attention.Fergus Falls Economic Improvement Commission Director Harold Stanislawski is a staunch supporter of the concept.
“I’m 100 percent for it,” he said. “This is a proven economic theory that we know works. There’s been some scientific differences (as to) how many times a dollar spends in a community, but I think it’s at least five times. Almost all of us who do business locally, buy locally, and if the dollar moves around five times, then it has touched five people and has caused goods and services to be exchanged five times. The government also benefits, because there is probably some sales tax involved.”
Consumer confidence is another strength of this trend.
“They know that (our beef) is locally grown,” Home Ranch Beef owner Tim Enderson said, “and that it’s not coming from Australia or somewhere else. A lot of beef (in the U.S.) is blended with imported beef. And we sell a lot of beef to the packers too, but we keep our highest quality cattle for the local store. (Our consumers) know what kind of quality they’re getting.”
