Bulgaria Reports Swine Fever in the Southeast

Photo dated March 2006 shows slaughtered pigs being thrown into a container following an outbreak of swine fever in Germany. Bulgarian veterinary health authorities are preparing to slaughter 142 pigs to prevent the spread of an outbreak of swine fever in the southeast of the country.

The disease was detected Thursday in a farm in the village of Tenevo, local veterinary chief Krasimir Dyulgerov told state BTA news agency.

Authorities began Friday the slaughtering of all the farm's pigs to prevent the disease from spreading further, he added.

This is the second swine fever outbreak reported in Bulgaria this year. In January, authorities had slaughtered some 164 infected pigs at a farm in the town of Smyadovo in the northeast.
