Croatia steps up measures against swine fever

CROATIA - Croatia on Tuesday said it had issued a selective nationwide ban on the transport of pigs in a bid to halt a swine fever epidemic that has hit farms in one third of the country.

Pigs are seen at a farm in Schwerdoff, France in 2002. Croatia on Tuesday said it had issued a selective nationwide ban on the transport of pigs in a bid to halt a swine fever epidemic that has hit farms in one third of the country.

"The spreading of the disease is worrying. Two weeks ago swine fever was present in only two counties. It has since been reported in six counties" out of 21, agriculture ministry spokesman Mladen Pavic told AFP.

"We have forbidden transport of pigs in the whole country, pig fairs, feeding them slops and keeping them in open spaces," he said.

The measures do not apply to major pork producers who have already upgraded bio-security measures at their plants.
