Crisis Continues In Croatia

The figures on the report clearly illustrate how worrying this crisis has become. The list of affected farms seems to grow day by day, despite of the desperate measures applied by the Croatian authorities.  In one week alone the total amount of susceptible pigs numbered 66. In response 362 have been slaughtered and twelve died from the disease itself.

The disease spreads East and West like wild fire.

The last report from the OIE reported only ten outbreaks, but the damage was arguably more significant as the disease struck larger farms and 400 pigs had to be destroyed. The current outbreaks all date back from to an initial appearance in September 2006 when 864 pigs had to be culled due to contact from a wild species.

The disease has travelled both East and West from it's previous outbreak, spreading like wild fire. Internationally the outbreaks are causing havoc also, and it seems unlikely that Brussels will lift its ban by August.
