Prague - Some 200 Czech pig farmers gathered Monday at the Dolni Dvoriste/Wullowitz border crossing to Austria in order to protest imports of pork to the Czech Republic. The protest was sparked by a recent decision of Interspar supermarket chain to bring pork to its Czech stores from Austria.
"Interspar resolved to supply a half of their stores entirely from Austria. We lost our patience," Jan Zahorka, secretary of the Czech Agrarian Chamber, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The pig breeders blame chains that have also imported meat from Poland for jeopardizing Czech pork production. They claim that the imported meat is of a lesser quality.
