Gestation Stall Campaign Continues to Grow

MARYLAND - The nationwide effort to ban the use of gestation stalls continues to gather momentum. Elected officials in Maryland have introduced in both of the state‘s legislative houses legislation aiming to ban the use of gestation stalls for expecting sows.

It prescribes a penalty of a maximum of 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000 to anyone convicted. If enacted, the law would take effect Oct. 1. Maryland‘s movement follows that of Oregon and California, whose legislatures are also discussing the matter. Florida and Arizona have already outlawed gestation crates in the past couple years.

Gestation stalls are also a hot topic within the food industry. Smithfield Foods got the ball rolling in January when it announced it would phase them out over the next 10 years. A month later, Canadian pork processor Maple Leaf Foods said it would implement the same plan. Also, Burger King announced late last month that its newly adopted animal welfare policy would include buying 10 percent of its pork from farms that don‘t “cage” their animals.
