Another closure for Maple Leaf

CANADA - Maple Leaf Foods Inc. has said it plans to shut down a pork processing plant in Toronto at the end of October, affecting about 100 jobs and resulting in a pre-tax charge of about $5-million.

The Toronto plant produces red-meat products for food-service clients, but Maple Leaf said it would roll those operations into a newly acquired plant in Brampton, on the outskirts of Toronto.

The company said it would book most of the pre-tax charge in 2007.

Maple Leaf, one of Canada's largest food processors, began to restructure its operations last year to exit the unprofitable hog production and pork export business and instead focus on higher-end meat processing.

This announcment follows the recent closure of Maple Leaf's Mitchell plant in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
