Pork more important than ethanol in China

With the authorities worried by food-driven inflation, particularly a sharp climb in pork prices, word leaked from an energy conference held in Beijing over the weekend that the central government has decided to cease issuing licenses for producing corn-based ethanol, an environmentally friendly substitute for gasoline.

"Food-based ethanol fuel will not be the direction for China," said Xu Dingming, vice director of the Office of the National Energy Leading Group, according to the People's Daily.
