Print This Page Aussie Exodus causing concern
AUSTRALIA - High feed prices and increasing global competiton is having a dire effect on Autralia's pig industry. Confidence is low and there are clear signs that more pig farmers are choosing to leave the industry.Dr Bruce Mullan of Western Australia's Department of Agriculture and Food, said the industry stands to lose several thousand sows if market pressures continue.
"There is an oversupply of product, brought about mainly by record high levels of imports coming in to Australia. It's mostly product for processing so producer margins at the moment are very, very tight and some producers have already decided to exit the industry."
