AMS Reopens Country-of-Origin Proposed Rule Comment Period
US - The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has reopened the comment period for 60 days for the proposed rule for mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COL) for beef, lamb, pork, perishable agricultural commodities, and peanuts.It was published in the Federal Register on Oct. 30, 2003 (68 Fed. Reg. 61944). AMS will accept comments on any topic related the proposal, but is seeking comments on several specific topics. Comments must be submitted by Aug. 20, 2007.
Definitions for processed food items included in the interim final rule for fish and shellfish may apply to beef, lamb, pork, perishable commodities, and peanuts. The regulatory requirements in the fish rule concerning country-of-origin notification, markings, and record keeping could possibly work for red meat, perishable agricultural commodities and peanuts.
