Clark County farm free of pseudorabies

WISCONSIN - No additional cases of pseudorabies were found in a second round of testing near a Clark County hog farm found to be infected with the disease this spring, the state veterinarian said Monday.

State Veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt said the negative results mean that the farm near Greenwood will be released from quarantine and will be able to move live hogs onto and off the farm again.

A second Clark County farm that was also found to be infected in April is to be retested between July 22 and Aug. 22. That farm, near Loyal, will remain under quarantine in the meantime and will still be subject to trade restrictions imposed by Michigan, Kansas and California, he said.

Swine within five miles of both farms were tested following the discovery of the virus among animals on those two.

Federal regulations require that swine within two miles of pseudorabies-infected farms be retested within 30 to 60 days after the infected farms are cleaned and disinfected. Those other farms have not been quarantined during the waiting period.

Swine from 68 farms were tested during the outbreak in April, and 10 from the Greenwood area farm and 11 from the herd near Loyal tested positive.
