Pork Farms announced at lunchtime yesterday that a 90-day consultation will now be carried out with trade unions and staff before a final decision is made on the closure.

The proposal is to close the factory and move production to Nottingham.

Mike Godley, general manager at Trowbridge, said: "We understand that this proposal is likely to cause concern for those affected and their families. We would like to thank employees and trade unions for their co-operation and continued support at this time.

"We shall of course be consulting fully with all potentially affected employees and keeping them fully appraised of the situation as it progresses and we will be actively looking to redeploy employees in other Pork Farms factories. While this proposal is regrettable it is essential to achieve the required cost structure to protect and grow our future business in the UK."

The company says it would look to redeploy staff from Trowbridge to their factory in Shaftesbury.
