No more PIES
The Pig Industry Environment Strategy (PIES) steering group has sacked itself : the work is done. The group’s aim has been to come up with a means of taming environmental legislation and its associated red tape. The results of its labours will go out to the industry next month, for consultation.
The steering group has collected and acted upon feedback from producers and is proposing an alliance between (predominantly) pig-keepers, Defra and the Environment Agency, to be known as the Pig Environment Partnership.
The group is clear that a partnership approach to environmental regulation will help pig-keepers reduce harmful impact on the environment and that this will, in turn, give legislators and regulators the confidence to introduce and enforce current and future environmental legislation with a lighter and less bureaucratic touch.
The group has been keen to emphasise that there is no ‘Get out of jail free’ card where environmental legislation is concerned but the Pig Environment Partnership, if adopted by the industry, Defra and the Environment Agency, is capable of delivering tangible benefits for everyone.
The consultation document will be available here next month. If the industry approves the Pig Environment Partnership consultation, farming minister Lord Rooker will be asked to formally launch it in October.
