PRRS puts Vietnamese off pork

VIET NAM - Pork sales have plunged in Ho Chi Minh City markets, but shot up in supermarkets amid fears of infected meat from blue ear disease that has been raging among pigs in five provinces.

Nguyen Xuan Trang, head of Pham Van Hai market, said sales had fallen by 10 percent in the last four days.

Wholesalers reported a decrease of 10-20 percent and retailers of up to 50 percent.

A retailer said before the disease became known through the media she sold 250 kg of pork in the morning daily but it had fallen to a third since.

Go Vap market also reported a similar situation. A market official said due to the low demand many had stopped selling pork.

But the markets’ loss has been the supermarkets’ gain. Bui Duy Duc, director of Vissan foods, said his company’s outlets in HCMC had seen a jump of over 20 percent in demand to 15 tons daily.

Having prepared for the situation, Vissan could meet the demand for safe pork with its stringent quality control systems from breeding to culling.
