Ban on British Pork Imports Possible

SEOUL - British pigs and pork are likely to be banned in Korea after a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak at a farm in southern England.

The Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry announced on August 5, “British pigs and pork, which are currently being imported to Korea, are being detained in quarantine because of the foot-and-mouth strain that was found in a cattle farm in Britain.” It also added, “If the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) officially reports the outbreak of the disease on August 6, Korea will immediately ban related imports.”

The European Union (EU) also revealed that it will take an emergency measures to ban export of British stocks and meats on August 6. The British government reported on August 3 that 60 cattle were found infected with a foot-and-mouth strain on a farm in southern England not far from the city of London.

British pork imported to Korea accounted for 0.5 percent of Korea’s total pork imports through July this year, amounting to 804 tons. It has been estimated that there is no pork that is either under quarantine or ahead of the quarantine.
