SOUTH KOREA - South Korea has banned imports of British pork and pigs following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in southern England last week, the Agriculture Ministry said Monday.Shipments of pork and live pigs will be sent back or destroyed, the ministry said in a statement, adding that all quarantine inspections of British pork have been suspended until further notice.
South Korea has imported 64 live pigs and 804 tons of pork from Britain this year, equivalent to 0.5 percent of its total pork imports.
An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Britain led to the slaughter of millions of pigs and cattle in 2001.
Cattle at a farm about 30 miles southwest of London tested positive last week for a strain of the disease identical to one used at a nearby laboratory, and veterinary experts are trying to establish if the disease originated from there.
The lab is shared by the British government's Institute for Animal Health and a private pharmaceutical company, Merial Animal Health.
