U.S. - Canadian Hog Inventory Up 1 percent

US - This publication is a result of a joint effort by Statistics Canada and NASS to release the total hogs, breeding, market hogs, sows farrowed, and pig crop for both countries within one publication. This information was requested by the U.S. hog industry to provide producers additional information about potential hog supplies. U.S. inventory numbers were previously released on June 29, 2007.

Please note that the Canadian data contained in this release have been adjusted to align with the results of the May 16, 2006, Canadian Census of Agriculture published last May. The primary focus of the adjustments is on the inventory estimates at the national and provincial level and in some cases, the adjustments were smoothed back to 2002. The estimates related to production have not been affected substantially.

Inventory of all hogs and pigs for June 2007 in the U.S. and Canada was 77.4 million head. This was up 1 percent from June 2006 and up 2 percent from June 2005. The breeding inventory, at 7.69 million head, was up 1 percent from a year ago, and up slightly from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 69.8 million head, was up 1 percent from last year, and up 2 percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 35.0 million head, was up 2 percent from both 2006 and 2005. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 3.77 million head, up 1 percent from last year.

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2007 was 62.8 million head. This was up 2 percent from both June 1, 2006 and March 1, 2007. Breeding inventory, at 6.12 million head, was up 1 percent from both last year and previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 56.6 million head, was up 2 percent from both last year and last quarter.

Inventory of all hogs and pigs on July 1, 2007 in Canada was 14.7 million head, down 2 percent from last year and down slightly from last quarter. The breeding inventory, at 1.57 million head, was down 1 percent from last year and unchanged from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 13.1 million head, was down 3 percent from last year and down slightly from last quarter. The pig crop, at 7.84 million head, was down slightly from 2006 and down 4 percent from 2005. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 802,000 head, down 1 percent from last year.
