Industry warns of deadly disease if pork import rules change

NEW ZEALAND - Pork Industry representatives have met Biosecurity Minister Jim Anderton to discuss their concerns about changes to the importing of pork, which could introduce a deadly disease.

Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome, or PRRS, attacks the reproductive and respiratory systems in pigs and can result in outbreaks of abortion, dead or weak piglets and respiratory disease in all ages of pigs

Currently, imported pig meat has to be treated or frozen, which kills the disease, but Biosecurity NZ is proposing to allow the importation of chilled pork products, such as pork chops.
