AUSTRALIA - Australian scientist, Dr Cheryl Jenkins, has been awarded a $US8,500 government agricultural grant to research the cause of pneumonia in pigs.Dr Jenkins, from Wollongong, south of Sydney, says the disease causes a significant economic burden on the pig industry in Australia.
She hopes her research will lead to the development of a vaccine down the track and says that she'll use some of the grant money to work with overseas experts.
"The reason I applied for the money is to travel to Germany and work with some eminent scientists over there. They're experts in microbio pathio genesis and they have some state of the art equipment. So that will help get the project going."
