Higher pig prices must stay, to offset feed costs

AUSTRALIA - A welcome improvement in pig meat prices at the Dublin pig market, SA, during recent weeks has sparked hope for sustained higher returns for pig producers grappling with high feed prices.

On the back of renewed buying interest and some hot bidding competition, a jump of about 55c/kg liveweight was registered earlier in September, pushing the average for bacon to $2.41/kg.

This peaked at $2.73/kg for baconers from a Two Wells,

SA, producer at last week's market, with a handful of other vendors achieving prices above $2.50/kg.

This has come after a disappointing run throughout much of the year, with pig prices struggling to reach $2/kg in many markets.

Across the pig market, it is hoped the positive signs signal some long-term improvements, notwithstanding the usual weekly fluctuations according to supply.

And in the face of increasing feed grain prices, most producers will need sustained improvements closer to $2.50-$3/kg before some balance can be restored to their long-suffering balance sheets.
