UK - The pig industry census conducted on the NPA website between 30 September 30 and 3 October, shows producers representing over a quarter of the United Kingdom pig herd cannot continue production after December 2007 - unless they receive a significant increase in price. This signals a much more profound effect on supplies of British pork, sausage, bacon and ham in 2008 than had previously been predicted by NPA and BPEX.
BPEX statisticians are currently analysing the results of the census with a view to presenting the facts to Government about this threat to the nation's food supply.
