Pig disease hits one more Vietnamese province

CHINA - Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) outbreaks among pigs have recently occurred in northern Hai Duong province, raising the total localities hit by the disease in Vietnam to three, local newspaper Pioneer reported Monday.

The disease has hit a number of pigs in some households in Thanh Ha district, the paper quoted the Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as reporting.

Local veterinary agencies have intensified the culling of infected pigs to prevent the disease from spreading.

Now, the disease is hitting three Vietnamese provinces, namely Hai Duong in the northern region, and Khanh Hoa and Ca Mau in the south.

PRRS was first recognized in the United States in the mid-1980s and is now present in most pig producing countries. The symptoms include reproductive failure, pneumonia and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.
