Pig production business planned for North and South Koreans
KOREA - North Korea and South Korea have decided to establish a jointly operated hog farm in the North's capital as part of an attempt to alleviate the communist nation's chronic food shortages, a South Korean official said today.The agreement came on the heels of a wide range of accords reached by the leaders of the two Koreas last month.
Officials of the two Koreas agreed to run the farm in Pyongyang for a two-year trial period in talks in the North Korean border city of Kaesong on Monday. They plan to meet again to map out details such as when to open it, said Park Won-jae, a spokesman at South Korea's Unification Ministry in Seoul.
The South will provide hogs, feed, equipment and other materials needed to build up the farm, while the North will provide land, electricity, water and labor, the ministry said in a press release.
The farm will breed about 5,000 hogs, it said.
"The hogs are aimed at resolving the North's food shortage problem," Park said, adding the animals will not be exported to South Korea or other countries.
