Print This Page A Good Slap Needed
UK - Clear identification is a vital element of QA and traceability - and a legal requirement, so to help stockmen produce clear identification on slaughter pigs, BPEX has produced a slap marking instruction sheet.
All pigs must be clearly slap marked with the Defra herd mark and this must take place before the pigs are loaded, reminds BPEX.
The slap mark must be legible before and after slaughter and it is the responsibility of the pig keeper to ensure that every pig being dispatched has been clearly and correctly slap marked.
What's more, UK producers have an ID advantage in the form of Slap marking, but if marks do not come up to scratch then the industry could lose this special EU derogation and would have to tag all pigs. So think clearly about marking those marks.
The slap marking instruction sheet can be downloaded off the BPEX website, or can be obtained from the KT Team.
