Print This Page Exports - A Ray of Hope For UK Pig Industry
UK - Yorkshire-based pig breeding company ACMC has announced orders for breeding stock worth nearly a quarter of a million pounds. They come from a number of European countries, including Poland and Spain where new genetics company, Genetica Meidam Sl, is being set up with ACMC as a major shareholder.
The re-established business follows the opening up of the EU market following Britain's officially declared freedom from foot-and-mouth disease.
Export orders from Russia, China, Thailand and the Philippines are also expected to resume now that the OIE - the world organisation for animal health - has given Britain international an FMD-free status.

"I believe the fact that so many countries have been prepared to wait for British stock, rather than go elsewhere for their breeding pigs reflects well on our reputation for quality genetics," said ACMC chairman, Stephen Curtis.
"While the UK pig farmers, including ourselves, are having a very rough ride at the moment, this is good news for the pig industry as a whole," he added.
Reliance
Due to the continuous shrinkage of the UK pig herd, British breeding companies do rely heavily on the export market which in turn offer direct benefits to British producers in terms of investment in genetic development programmes. Also a the healthy export trade developed by ACMC, means that the company is now looking for farmers to become as multipliers for its high-health stock. Units need to be in areas of low pig density and can be situated anywhere England, Scotland or Wales. It also offers producers an excellent opportunity to add value to their stock, says the company.
