WANTED: Technical Manager for Apex GN Complex

USA - PIC USA are looking for Technical Manager to implement and manage an efficient breeding and testing program to optimise the rate of genetic improvement within their Apex GN Complex, in South Dakota.

REPORTS TO: Complex Manager
LOCATION: Mound City, SD, USA

POSITION AIM:

To implement and manage an efficient breeding and testing program to optimise the rate of genetic improvement within the Apex GN Complex.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Animal Science with a course work in Genetics and Animal Breeding highly desirable. Additional training will be provided by PIC.
  • Ability to communicate technical priorities to production staff in a Genetic Nucleus farm and to establish effective working relationships with farm staff.
  • Strong background and interest in practical pig husbandry.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Team oriented
  • Efficient computer skills (e.g. MS Excel, SAS analytics and Oracle database software)
RESPONSIBILITIES/KEY TASKS:
  • Implementation of pure line testing and selection programs in a Genetic Nucleus farm. This involves determination and communication of testing and other targets to relevant production staff and working as a team member to achieve these targets.
  • Supervision of a technical team in the Genetic Nucleus farm.
  • Responsible for the quality of data collected and entered into the database and for conducting periodic accuracy checks on ultrasound technicians, feet and leg and conformation scores and electronic feed stations.
  • Scheduling and participating as required in routine carcass characterisation work with samples of Genetic Nucleus pigs.
  • Preparing control charts and a written monthly farm report.
  • Selection of animals based on phenotype and genotype.
